Light Fluffy Powder, Yeah!

The latest in our series of storms was the best yet — 7” of light fluffy powder! On top of the rain crust, we now have some fantastic conditions.  While it might be a bit on the cold side this weekend, bundle up, in layers, so you can adjust your clothing as needed. Triple Bypass, Stowe Derby and Adams Camp trails are all groomed, so check them out!

Tour de Stowe, This Saturday, January 20th

The Tour de Stowe is this Saturday featuring a non-competitive ski tour through the Trapp Family Lodge and Stowe Mountain Resort trails. And the ski conditions should be fantastic.  This is the one event Stowe Nordic Club is organizing for the year and we hope club members participate and enjoy en masse!

There are course distances for everyone, welcoming all generations of skiers, from elementary school to masters!  BKL and juniors (17 yrs and under) receive a reduced entry fee, and everyone can enjoy a supported ski featuring trailside blueberry soup and snacks along the way. There will be equipment demos for all to try at Cross Country Skier Magazine’s first stop along their Tour de Trail. A Vendor Expo in the Yurt will feature our friends from Skida, BirdieBlue, Mountain Road Outfitters, and Cabot Cheese and Cold Hollow Cider Mill.

Adult participants in the 14km and 21km tours are additionally invited to a post ski celebration in the Bierhall with schnitzel, bratwurst, pretzels, and VonTrapp beer, plus a raffle featuring generous donations from Swix that include a wax table, ski and boot bags, and waxes/supplies.

Online registration is at skireg.com until Friday at noon.  Day of registration is available for an additional $10.  Tour starts at 11AM and the Kids tour at 11:30AM by the Trapp Outdoor Center Yurt.

The hills truly are alive, heralding in winter with a blanket of fresh snow this week.  Proceeds go to the Stowe Nordic Foundation and will support youth nordic programs in Vermont.  Skiing, friends, delicious food, fun products, and a ski-community celebration in the Bierhall are certainly a few of our favorite things and we look forward to seeing you!

Sally Howe Memorial Bench – More donations Needed

Sally Howe, a long time Stowe Nordic member, passed away from cancer in April.  Sally was a long time participant in our Masters program, and assisted Trina Hosmer at the NENSA Women’s Day event for many years. She also showed her dedication to Stowe Nordic by faithfully coming from South Burlington for training as well as the non-snow season weekly hikes up Mt Mansfield. She enriched the lives of others with her career as a guidance counselor, by creating music with local symphony groups and choruses as well as being a good friend to many.

To keep Sally alive in our memories, Stowe Nordic and Rick Hubbard, Sally’s longtime partner. will be putting a memorial bench at Trapp’s Picnic Knoll. If you need a break on the way up to the cabin (or need a break after zooming down Parizo),  you could stop and share your ski adventures with Sally. Please send Donations to Stowe Nordic, ℅ George Jackman, 291 East Tamarack Road, Stowe, Vermont 05672.
