Program Overview
This seven-session program is for adult beginners who are new to classic cross-country skiing or who have skied some but have not received any formal instruction. The first session on November 12 will be off-snow where we will discuss the different types of cross-country skis and ski gear, and talk about which will be appropriate for the training sessions. The program will be capped at 20 participants.
Fundamentals Taught
How to put poles on correctly. How to get up when you fall down. Stance and balance. Diagonal stride (gliding on one ski). Poling correctly. Climbing (herringbone), and descending hills. Turning and stopping (snowplow).
Goals
- Give students an understanding of the diversity of nordic skis and skiing gear.
- Give students the confidence to pursue cross-country skiing outside of a training environment.
- Turn people on to a fun and healthy lifetime sport that keeps them active in the winter.
Program Coordinator
Kevin Bracey
Kevin Bracey will coordinate the program, with the assistance of volunteer instructors from the Stowe Nordic Masters Ski Program. Kevin joined the Stowe Nordic Club in 2019 and soon discovered a passion for cross-country skiing at the age of 57. He’s living proof that it is never too late to learn to nordic ski. You can find him most winter days at Trapp’s or one of the other nearby cross-country ski centers joyfully gliding through the snow for mile after mile. Kevin believes the best way to enjoy a Vermont winter is to be outside and take in all of its beauty. He has been a student in the Stowe Nordic Masters Ski program for the last four years and his enthusiasm for sharing the sport of cross-country skiing has led to him becoming the Coordinator of the new Nordic Skiing Basics Program.
